During three separate public hearings held on June 3, June 9, and June 16, representatives of NYLPI’s Environmental Justice program testified about the impact proposed regulations would likely have on communities overburdened by waste. NYLPI praised efforts by New York City and state agencies to tighten regulation of waste facilities and to increase recycling rates, but stressed that much more remains to be done. In particular, NYLPI pointed out that adopting a zone system for the City’s commercial waste hauling would greatly reduce the number of trucks on the streets, and also promote transparency and accountability in one of the dirtiest and most unsafe industries in the City.
