Deinstitutionalization

Deinstitutionalization

We work to increase meaningful choices for individuals with disabilities by advocating for system change that will give everyone a chance to live in a community based placement and for people living in the community to have the services they need to stay there. We also work to improve conditions within existing institutions and give residents and their families/advocates information about their rights and help advocating for them.

Our main program efforts focus on the needs of individuals seeking or receiving services through the New York State Office of Mental Health (OMH) and the New York State Office for People With Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD) although we work to advocate for individuals living in other institutional settings as well.

Some examples of the Deinstitutionalization program’s advocacy efforts are:

  • NYS CARES – a long term advocacy effort with OPWDD demanding the creation of community based residential placements for individuals. In addition to advocating on a systemic basis, we also work to address the individual problems of those who have been on the NYS CARES waiting list for an extended period of time.
  • OPWDD Eligibility – through community education and individual advocacy, NYLPI seeks to ensure that individuals and families can successfully navigate the process of obtaining OPWDD services for their loved ones.
