Healthy Nail Salons

Addressing workplace exposure to pollution or hazardous materials such as waste or toxic chemicals is a core environmental justice issue, which is why NYLPI is part of the Healthy Nail Salon Coalition, which seeks to establish health and safety standards for nail salon workers, build monitoring and enforcement systems, and promote the broad use of best-practices in New York nail salons.

The problem: health hazards from nail salon chemicals

The nail salon industry is one of the fastest growing industries in the U.S. employing nearly 375,000 nail technicians and generating approximately 6-7 billion dollars in annual revenue. There are approximately 2,000 nail salons in New York City and 5,000 total in New York State. The nail salon industry houses some of the United States’ lowest paid workers—mainly immigrant women—who are exposed to toxic chemicals every day on the job.

Healthy Nail Salon Coalition (HNSC)

The New York Healthy Nail Salons Coalition, founded by Adhikaar and New York Committee on Occupational Safety and Health (NYCOSH), aims to improve New York nail salons for workers and consumers by enforcing existing safety and health regulations as well as wage and hour laws; and by building new standards that protect the rights of nail salon workers.
